Food and Drink

Tempt your taste buds with a superb range of eating options.

Restaurants recommended in the best Australian food guides, cosy cafes and coffee shops, hotels that take pride in both the quality and quantity of their servings, delicious offerings from many different cultures and countries, plus any number of takeaway and fast-food options - eating on the coast offers so much variety.

Be traditional and eat fish and chips or a pie as you watch the waves, go healthy with fresh local vegetables and seasonal fruit from around Australia, or linger over a gourmet restaurant meal accompanied by a fine wine.

Hotels and taverns along the coast provide excellent meals at value prices, with extensive menus to suit all tastes.

Why not have a typical Aussie barbeque? Many recreation reserves and parks have barbeque facilities installed ready-for-use, as do camping grounds, resorts and caravan parks. Local butchers will be happy to supply some top-quality local meat for the feast.

As you would expect from an area that has a major fishing industry, the seafood is superb, and the meats from local farms are export quality.

Local dairy produce is another delight, with local butters and cheeses, including award-winning gourmet ranges that are sold around the world.

Fine wines and a variety of beers are available to accompany any meal, with some excellent wines being produced in the southwest district.

Prefer something non-alcoholic? Try some locally-made fruit juices or soft drinks, or be refreshed with a glass of fresh local milk. Superb coffee is a passion for many restaurateurs on the coast, and the delights of various blends of tea can also be sampled.

If you are a visitor to Australia, you must try the milkshakes and 'spiders' - they are national institutions! Just inquire at any milk bar.
